HireMerge is currently recruiting a Construction Superintendent for a general contractor in Portsmouth, VA, specializing in industrial, heavy marine, and concrete construction. The superintendent will run the day-to-day operations on the construction site and control the schedule of construction projects. We are looking for a strong leader who is experienced in managing construction subcontractors and suppliers, cost monitoring, scheduling, and problem-solving.
This is a full-time position with full benefits and minimal travel.
Responsibilities
Knowledge of building construction means and methods, scheduling and cost control procedures, general contracts, general conditions, subcontract documents, drawings, and specifications
Ability to track subcontractors’ progress on the job, maintain the project schedule, and coordinate with various agencies for reporting and compliance with project documents and specifications
Ability to manage field crew, including project engineers, foremen, and assistant superintendent
Responsible for quality control
Provide on-site coordination of manpower, materials, equipment, and site logistics
Effectively manage job site challenges such as weather conditions or emergencies
Plans and supervises all activities, including determining the method of construction, sequencing, manpower levels, material quantities, equipment, and work schedule
Manages the day-to-day activities of the construction operation; creates daily job reports
Provides input to cost and schedule forecasts; verifies work progress
Coordinates with different crafts, company departments, or other contractors to ensure all required materials, equipment, inspections, etc., support project activities and project schedule
Assists in resolving field construction problems (lack of productivity, work interfaces, etc.)
Monitors craft and subcontractor compliance with project safety program requirements; performs weekly safety inspections and toolbox talks; documents and ensures corrective measures are implemented
Ensures craft timecards are completed accurately, reflecting hours worked and tasks worked on; assigns cost codes to all purchases, time cards, contracts, equipment time, and any other item involving cost
Keep the Project Engineer informed of changes made in the field so that such changes may be covered by general contact change orders and subcontract change orders.
Performs project close-out and ensures punch list is completed in a timely manner
Attends branch operation meetings as required
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent
5+ years of related construction experience
3+ years of supervisory experience in the construction field
2+ years of marine construction experience with piers, docks, and concrete pilings is a plus
Computer skills and a familiarity with Microsoft Office suite programs
Strong management, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing with all types of personnel
